In 1931, Lloyd Jeck was born in the small British Columbia town of McBride. This mountain valley lies west of the Canadian Rocky Mountains along the eastern border of the province. Many of the stories, contained in the three books that he has written, are centred in and around this spectacular location. Excerpts from two reader testimonials are shown above.

Beaver Mountain, Robson Valley, British Columbia, Canada. See that horizontal white line in centre of photo? That is Rock Ledge No. 1, described in my latest book Chips From My Axe. There used to be a one-roomed-log school at the left hand end of that escarpment. For seven years I walked one mile to that building to acquire the eight elementary grades. The photographer, who took the picture, was standing very near to the CNR tracks, on Eddy Road at junction of Titiryn Road. Distance, from CNR tracks to the rock ledge, is about three miles (4.828 km).
Enjoy the fresh woodsy feel of natural paper copies that are sure to elevate your spirits to new heights.

British Columbia Trails Heading North

Stories of five early pioneers create the backbone of the book. Let yourself slip back in time to when these daring men travelled to and within British Columbia's mountainous terrain. We go back to where they came from and follow their tracks to this country and into the treacherous wilds of undeveloped lands.
During the 1920s wild horses were competing with increasing Okanagan beef herds. Local cowboys took action and rounded up 1,400 head which were all crowded into one large corral. Early one morning the gate was opened and probably Canada's largest "horse drive" was underway. This was the beginning of a journey that took the animals all the way to Russia. Read about it in British Columbia Trails Heading North.

An excerpt from "Ben Snipes - Baron of Beef" in British Columbia Trails Heading North by Lloyd Jeck.
"Ben's ranching successes are legendary. Some estimates, during the peak of his ranching career, placed herd numbers at "- -125,000 head of beef cattle and 20,000 horses". Whatever the real tally, the man had great vision and the fortitude to work his way through whatever obstacle confronted him. Snipes drove herd's of cattle into British Columbia to feed hungry miners at Barkerville. Ben Snipes died in 1906 and is buried in the cemetery at The Dalles, Oregon, USA".

In the Shadow of the Peaks:
Rocky Mountain Tales

The following is a written comment received from J. in Osoyoos, B.C.:
"Just a short note to let you know how much I enjoyed "In The Shadow Of The Peaks". It is so very well written. I could relate to so many of your adventures having grown up in Northern Alberta when my dad was developing the land. Your ability to hold the reader through your writing is extraordinary and I thank you for that."

Zero in on the horizontal white line in centre of photo. That is a "rock ledge" and the elementary school (grades 1 - 8) that I attended was at the left end of that rocky playground. Grab a copy of "In the Shadow of the Peaks" to get the details. Map shows geographic location of country-living described in the "Shadow" book.
